M.L. ELRICK OUTRAGED AT PROBATION SENTENCE

FOR FORMER DETROIT COUNCILMAN GABE LELAND

Detroit, Mich. — M.L. Elrick, a Detroit City Council candidate, expressed his frustration Monday, at the 2.5-year probation sentence handed down today to former Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland for misconduct in office. 

“It’s an outrage that Gabe Leland, who betrayed the public trust, won’t spend one night behind bars after pleading guilty to misconduct in office,” Elrick said. 

Elrick publicly called for Leland’s resignation in April when no one else would speak out against Leland using his position to enrich friends and loved ones. As an investigative journalist, Elrick exposed Leland’s voting record on $2M in city contracts that went to companies owned by Leland’s then-girlfriend. He also revealed secret FBI recordings of Leland negotiating a $15,000 bribe.

“I have always called out—and I will never stop calling out—officials who put self-service before public service,” Elrick continued, “Leland’s plea deal was far too lenient.”
